Political Science Association Confab Opens In PH , Today
The 30th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Political Science Association designed to come up with pragmatic suggestions that could lead the country out of her present political challenges begins in Port Harcourt, today.
Secretary of the Local Organising Committee of the two-day conference and Associate Professor of Political Science, Dr. Fidelis Allen, who disclosed this, yesterday, said the event will hold at the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
In an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, Allen said that the conference, which attracts political scientists across Nigeria, will braintstorm on the theme; “Elections, Security Challenges and Development in Africa”, with the hope of coming up with practical suggestions that will address the lingering problems of political violence in Nigeria and the difficulty in achieving smooth political succession in Africa.
“We are all aware that one of the biggest challenges in Africa is (political) succession – how to ensure non-violent succession, and for us in this country, we are grateful to God that we haven’t seen military coups since 1999″, he said, noting, however, that the recurrent incidence of violence during elections was a disturbing trend that needs to be addressed with all the urgency and decisiveness it deserves.
He regretted the seeming lack of a strong voice from political scientists in showing a clear political direction for Africa in general and Nigeria in particular but blamed the situation on political actors for not giving “much attention to cutting edge research findings when it comes to how to tackle development issues.
“As political scientist, we are actually to provide political direction when it comes to legitimate rule, when it comes to leadership that is responsive to the needs of the ruled”, he stressed, and expressed optimism that political scientists could actually play a significant role in resolving the issues that have retarded our political development.
“The only problem is the situation where you find policy makers and politicians not having the little regard for researchers, for academics who have so much to offer when it comes to the development of this country”, Allen regretted, and pleaded with government to support research and foster adequate collaboration and partnership with the universities in finding solutions to the problems of the society.
According to Allen, some of the dignitaries expected at the conference include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike and Governor Adams Oshiomohle of Edo State, among others.
