The Cross River State
Government says it is committed to the total rehabilitation of all cocoa plantations, across the State for the overall benefit of its people.
The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Prof. Anthony Eneji, stated this during ground breaking ceremony for the commencement and rehabilitation of access roads in the Cross River State owned cocoa estates in Abia/Bendeghe.
Commissioner Eneji maintained that, cocoa industry had become the State’s major crop as a result of dwindling allocation from the federation account over the past years.
He called on the people of Abia/Bendeghe to reciprocate the untiring efforts of the State Governor, Prof. Ben Ayade towards positioning cocoa as a major source of revenue to the State.
Speaking earlier, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Cocoa Development, Mr. Oscar Ofuka, noted that the commencement of the ground breaking ceremony for the rehabilitation of access road, was to show the importance the State Government attached to the development of cocoa and the need to keep faith in His Excellency, Prof. Ben Ayade’s promise during his electioneering campaign that he would not privatize the Cocoa Estates.
According to him, with the commencement of the exercise across the estates, government’s desire is to make cocoa farming maximally productive and rewarding and to enable beneficiaries of the small holders scheme reap from the dividends of democracy.
In his remarks, the Director of Agric Services in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Anari E. Anari said that, the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources had come up with a road map that would position the State as the number one cocoa producing State in the country within the next four years.
Mr. Anari called on all cocoa beneficiaries not to sub-let their farms to others, since the Technical Management Team set up by the State Government would make cocoa seedlings available to all cocoa beneficiaries for the total rehabilitation of the Estates.
