FG, NDA Dialogue: NDYC Defends Nomination
A youth group in the
Niger Delta region, Niger Delta Youth Coalition (NDYC) has explained reason behind its nomination of the National Co-ordinator of the body, Prince Emmanuel Ogba, as one of the dialogue team member between the Federal Government and militants in the region towards search of lasting peace in the oil-rich region.
National Secretary of NDYC, Dr. Joe Amachiri, who disclosed this in an interview with The Tide over the weekend in Port Harcourt said NDYC remains one of the oldest youth bodies involved in peace campaign in the region.
According to the NDYC scribe, for the lasting peace in the region, there is need for the process to involve the right persons and groups without personal or political interest but with the interest of peaceful development of the region at heart.
Amachiri noted that the Presidential Amnesty Programme initiated by Federal Government under the regime of late President Umaru Yar’Adua did not achieve the much desired result because some groups were not carried along.
“It is important this time to avoid the mistakes of the past and to take appropriate steps towards addressing the problem of militancy right and ensure enduring peace in Niger Delta,” he said.
He explained that though NDYC does not support violence or destruction of oil installations in its agitation for fairness and justice in the region, the body has its spread across the nine Niger Delta states and so could reach out to youth in the region in its campaign for peace which most groups lack.
Unfortnately, he said, the group has never benefitted from any of the programmes of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) nor that of the past amnesty programme, adding that sidelining of deserving groups from the developmental schemes, especially those involved in peace campaign as a major weakness in the process is counter-productive for peace in the region.
He said, the implication of not carrying non violent groups could naturally turn the neglected groups to carry arms since it appears that attentions were being directed at the violent groups.
