Freight Forwarders Decry Hike In Terminal Charges
The National Association
of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), has recently decried the 40 per cent increase in terminal charges introduced by operators.
The Public Relations Officer, Tin Can Island chapter of the association, Mr Godson Chukwu, spoke in an interview with our correspondent in Lagos.
Chukwu described the increase as arbitrary, saying the operators had no convincing reason to justify the hike.
“How can the operators wake up one day and decide to increase their terminal charges without justification, adding that they never held any meeting with the stakeholders, including the freight forwarders, before hiking their charges. This is not how things are done. This action is condemnable.
“We are calling on the Shippers Council to stop this aberration; there are procedures to be followed in doing these things,“ he said.
Chukwu said that though everybody was affected by the nation’s harsh economic situation, it should not have been a justification for the increase.
The NAGAFF spokesman said the new charges would affect the operations of the freight forwarders negatively.
He said that his members who had already charged their clients for yet-to-be-cleared consignments before the new charges would have to strive hard to convince them to pay extra cost.
“If a client does not believe you or understand what you are saying, it means you have to pay from your profit or lose the job. “If one fails to do any job because the gain is so little, then, how do you survive?’’ he asked.
Chukwu said that the association would find a way of negotiating with the terminal operators to resolve the issue.
