FG Beefs Up Internal Security

President Goodluck Jonathan said in Abuja yesterday, that his administration was committed to repositioning the para-military services in the Ministry of Interior to boost internal security.

Jonathan stated this at the inauguration of the Civil Defence Academy, the Nigerian Prisons Service Headquarters and the official residence of the Comptroller-General of Immigration at Sauka on the Umaru Yar’Adua Road.

He said that the activities of the services were vital to the security and economic development of the nation.

The president added that government was committed to providing the services with the necessary logistics to enable to them function effectively.

“The present administration is also committed to their welfare for maximum efficiency and service delivery,” he said.

Jonathan said that the projects would go a long way in complementing government’s effort at repositioning the services and urged the officers and men to put them to good use.

Earlier in an address, the Minister of Interior, retired Capt. Emmanuel Ihenacho, said the Civil Defence Academy would develop the capacity of the corps to effectively perform its statutory responsibility.

He added that in no distant time, the corps would inaugurate other projects in its eight zonal command headquarters.

Ihenacho said that the corps had carved a niche for itself in high level of discipline and professionalism in discharging such statutory tasks as anti-vandalism.

According to him, the completion of the official residence of the Comptroller-General of Immigration is a testimony of government’s commitment to the welfare of dedicated staff.

Ihenacho added that the inauguration of the Prisons Service Headquarters was an indication of the ministry’s programme of repositioning the service.

In an address, the Commandant-General of the Civil Defence Corps, Mr Ade Abolurin, said that the project cost N900 million.

He said that the project was completed in a record time of one year, adding that the corps did not give room to variation of project cost.

“This is a sure way of ensuring zero tolerance for corruption while striving to uphold financial discipline and avoiding financial recklessness,” he said.

The Head of Service (HoS) of Rivers State, Dr. Mrs. Inyingi S. I. Brown, has commended Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, for approving befitting accommodation for Permanent Secretaries in the state.

According to the Head of Service, Governor Fubara has continued to demonstrate uncommon commitment to the welfare of civil servants in Rivers State, stressing that such gestures underscore his people-oriented leadership style. Speaking on behalf of the Body of Permanent Secretaries, Dr. Brown congratulated Governor Fubara on the occasion of his 51st birthday, describing him as “a Governor who leads by serving.”

She further praised the governor’s service-driven and people-centred leadership approach, noting that it has significantly contributed to institutional stability and improved efficiency within the state’s public service. As part of activities to mark the governor’s birthday, the Body of Permanent Secretaries announced the sponsorship of 329 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) forms for indigent students across the state.

A breakdown of the initiative shows that 319 forms will be distributed across the 319 political wards in Rivers State, while five forms are allocated to non-indigenes and five forms to persons living with disabilities.
