Navy, JTF Destroy 16 Barges
So far, a total of 16
barges, 80 wooden cotonou boats were destroyed, with 42 outboard engines impounded and 17 vessels recovered by the Nigerian Navy in collaboration with the Joint Task Force Operation Pulo Shield and other security agencies from January 2016 till date.
The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja recently.
Ibas, who was represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Rear Admiral Jacob Ajani also hinted that 51 speed boats and seven wooden cotonous boats arrested, while 118 illegal refineries were destroyed during the period under review.
According to him, the Navy and the Joint Task Force said the achievement was part of efforts to check the menace of piracy, maritime crème and emerging security challenges in Nigerian waterways, adding that during the same period, 368 suspects were arrested, 1,025 drums, 2,339 jerry cans, 12 tankers and 21 vehicles were impounded.
Also impounded were 347 Geepee tanks, 63 pumping machines, 13 generators, 56 Sunface tanks, were confiscated and 120 storage tanks, 36 small arms, 12 welding machines and 16 hoses were recovered by the Navy.
The Chief of Naval Staff said that four Navy Ships were deployed for the operation in Nigerian waters over the security challenges and there had been success stories.
“I am sure in no time the story we would hear from that aspect will be more of good news”, adding, “As it is done in the North-East, even in the maritime frontiers we are co-operating with our neighbours, because as you are aware, security is the concern of everybody, moreso at sea which does not have well defined boundaries as on land.
