CRSG Woos UNOWAS On Border Demarcation
The Cross River State
Government has appealed to the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) to effect measures in the delineation of the Nigeria and Cameroun Borders to avoid undue misplacement of communities from one country to another.
The Deputy Governor, Prof. Ivara Esu, who represented the Governor, Senator (Prof.) Ben Ayade made the appeal when members of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) and the Cameroun , Nigerian Mix Commission CNMC, Calabar paid him a courtesy call in Government House, Calabar.
He commended the efforts the UN Office was making to keep the peace between the two countries and pointed out the complaints by some Boki communities that were ceded to Cameroun.
According to him, a situation where people are forced to belong to where they do not want could cause a breach of the peace between two countries.
He mentioned the issue of refugees from the Bakassi who had not been resettled and expressed hope that the State would be adequately compensated in that regard in their recommendations.
The Governor assured of government co-operation at all times in the course of carrying out their work.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Mr. Charles Ayidoho intimated that the visit was necessitated by the fact that a number of progress had been made between Nigeria and Cameroun on the issue of border conflict resolutions.
Mr. Ayidoho averred that it was time for a high level meeting between Nigeria and Cameroun to take place to be able to give directives to the technical team of the Borders Commission to move ahead, following the meeting between the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari and his Cameroun counterpart, Paul Biya recently.
He commended the two countries for exercising tremendous patience in working together to achieve a lasting solution to the border issues.
