‘Don’t Patronise Illegal Driving Schools In Rivers’
Drivers and intending
drivers in Rivers State have been enjoined to patronise only those driving schools certified by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for their training and retraining to become qualified drivers.
The sector commander of FRSC, Rivers State command, Mr Andrew Ayodele Kumapayi, made the call in a chat with The Tide in his office in Port Harcourt last Thursday.
Kumapayi said already the corps as a regulatory agency had started clamping down on illegal and unregistered driving schools in the state.
He opined that recently, the Rivers State Monitoring and Certification Committee that was inaugurated by the Commissioner for Transport, Dr Akie Fubara are assisting the corps to clamp down on such schools operating in the state.
The FRSC boss disclosed that the committee was also charged to inspect the certified schools inorder to ensure that they are conforming with the guidelines set-up by the corps, pointing out those that did not meet the standard would have their certificates revoked, as they always send their monthly reports to the national headquarters of the corps.
He enjoined the motoring public to clarify with the FRSC before enrolling in any driving school to avoid being a victim to these illegal ones that were not certified.
Kumapayi, however, disclosed that a comparative analysis of road traffic crashes in the state shows that in 2014, there were 14 cases of road crashes out of which 139 persons died and 334 injured, while in 2015, 86 road crashes were recorded with 91 killed and 231 injured, pointing out that there was 68.6 per cent decrease in road crashes in the comparative years as well as 53 per cent decrease in the number of persons killed and 45 per cent decrease in the number of those injured due to several enlightenment campaigns carried out by the command.
He called on all stakeholders to continue to cooperate with FRSC in their quest for zero tolerance in road crashes and enjoined all motorists to obey road traffic rules and regulations always.
