NAFDAC Seals Off Warehouse In Calabar
The National Agency For
Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed off a warehouse in Calabar, Cross River State capital.
A press release signed by the Agency’s public Relations Officer, South South zone, Mr, Cyril Monye and made available to The Tide in Port Harcourt, said that the affected warehouse was used to store fake food seasoning product (Benny Food Seasoning) worth five million naira.
The NAFDAC coordinator in Cross River State, Isaac Kolawole said that the sealing off of the warehouse followed a complaint by the manufacturer of the product (Benny Foods) about a fake brand of their product being circulated in the market.
We swung into action and our investigations led us to a warehouse where the products were stored and were eventually put on hold.
He said that attempt to arrest the culprit failed as he abandoned the product and disappeared.
Meanwhile, the agency has arrested a middle-aged man who specialised in cloning drug products.
According to the release, the man was also found with cloned Boscomark product a muscle relaxer, aldomet tramadol, amongst others.
Mr. Kolawale who spoke to newsmen on the activities of NAFDAC in the State, said that the agency was also enforcing the renewal of licences of bakeries to meet with good manufacturing practice (GMP), warning that any bakery that failed to comply would be sanctioned or shut down.
According to him, “from Sunday 2015, till now over 170 sanctions and administrative fines have been meted out to companies and establishments including sachets water factories for violating NAFDAC standard,” he said.
He used the occasion to commend NAFDAC Community Development Service (CDS) group members who have been campaigning and sensitising the public on the activities of NADAC.
The state coordinator who blamed the smuggling of spurious products from Cameroon into the country, on the absence of NAFDAC at border post, however said that the office was working closely with sister agencies such as the State Security Service (SSS) Customs, NDLEA and others to check the trend.
