RUWASA Plans Community-Led Sanitation In 63 Communities
The Rivers State Rural
Water and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) says, 63 communities in the 23 Local Government Areas, will benefit from the community led Total Sanitation exercise this year.
The planning, monitoring and evaluation officer of the agency Mr. Napoleon Adah who said this in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, also described sanitation as key to achieving quality health care for the people.
He said that, it was against this background that RUWASA is vigorously campaigning against open defeacations and other unsanitary practices in the rural communities.
Mr. Adah said that, the community led sanitation programme was to sensitise the people on the importance of cleanliness.
According to him, the programme involves advocacy and attitudinal change as regards hygienic behavior by the people.
Mr. Adah said that the programme will kick off as soon as funds are made available.
He also said that RUWASA is committed towards the success of the European Union/Niger Delta support programme which involves the provision of water to communities in the region.
According to him, the programme which, is currently being implemented in Akuku Toru and Opobo/Nkoro local government areas was part of the effort by both the government and the European Union to calm the nerves of the people. Mr Adah said that RUWASA is desirous of ensuring the success of the programme in the two local government areas so as to enable other local government areas to benefit.
He commended the State Commissioner for Water Resources, Chief Ibibia Walter for his pragmatic effort in bringing government programme to rural communities and assured of support.
