RSG To Tackle Flooding
The Rivers State intervention committee on flooding and drainage has expressed concern over the flooding problems at Central Bank junction, and Airforce-Market road, Port Harcourt-Aba Express way in Port Harcourt.
The chairman of the committee, Mr Godstime Oluoku disclosed this recently while speaking to newsmen in Port Harcourt.
Mr Oluoku assured the public that cases and problems of flooding in Port Harcourt and its environs would soon be a thing of the past.
“I am announcing to Rivers people, that my committee has noted some cases of flooding in Port Harcourt. The flooding at Central Bank Junction, and Port Harcourt-Aba express road at Rumuomasi look like a river, a situation that is so bad that we are having sleepless nights.
“The committee, with the support of the commissioner for Works and Environment, was able to discover that some where along the drainage channel was blocked. We went into action, opened-up the channel for free flow of water,” Mr Olouku said.
He condemned the dumping of solid wastes in drainage saying that in spite of daily campaigns warning people not to dump refuse inside drainage system, people still do it.
Mr Oluoku warned that Government would prosecute any person found dumping solid wastes in drainages in Port Harcourt.
He also used the opportunity to urge the public to support Government in ensuring frequent clearing of drainages in the state.
The committee chairman assured the public that flooding at the Central Bank junction, Saint Johns, Aba Road and others would be taken care of in no distant time.
