Seme Customs Nets N1.072bn Last Month
The Seme border com
mand of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) recorded a whopping revenue of N1,072, 484, 462.82 in the month of February 2016.
This was contained in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the command, Selchang Taupyen which was made available to journalists in the area.
The statement said the command also recorded 55 selzures with a duty paid value of N15,614,397.00, and described the development as the highest since the creation of the command.
It further stated that during the period under review, six suspects were also arrested in connection with the various items seized.
According to him, “it is also important to note that achieving this feat did not just come, considering the hiccups that militated against this unprecedented performance, both nationally and internationally.
“The revenue collected for the month exceeded the N899,800,250.76 collected within the same period in 2015, representing N172, 684, 212.06 excess collection”.
It however noted that some of the hiccups that the command faced during the period include the strike action by the Nigeria Port Authority (NPA), the prevailing high exchange rate in the country, and the protest by Benin Republic Customs, protest on the implementation process of unifying the ex-factory price nationally as well as the uncompromising stand of the command to remain resolute in adhering strictly to the service guidelines and procedures.
The statement quoted the Customs Area Controller, Victor Dimka as saying during his inaugural speech on his resumption of office that Seme boarder will never remain the same again, adding, “It is easy to attain success, but not easy to maintain success, therefore all hands must be on deck to maintain and exceed the current record.
