Google Nigeria Tasks Women On Online Tools
Country Manager,
Google Nigeria, Mrs Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazo, has urged women to leverage on online tools to achieve their goals.
Ehimuan-Chiazo made the appeal at a forum hosted by an NGO, Women in Tech Africa and titled “Lunch of Women in Tech Africa Nigeria Chapter’’, at the ongoing Social Media Week in Lagos, on Thursday.
“To be a woman in technology, it is important for a woman to be herself and know that she does not need to change who she is to be in technology field.
“You should be proud of everything that makes you a woman and utilise it for your own good and benefit.
“It is important to build competence as it is the best way to command respect.
“Women should focus more on charting their course so that they can create opportunity for others to follow,’’ she said.
Ehimuan-Chiazo added that the more women are in leadership positions, the more they would move forward.
“Women have always played a key role in national building as primary care givers, but there are not enough women in technology.
“Women need to have the opportunity to be driving forces for national growth and this can be done through them adopting fields like technology,’’ she said.
She said that in the current digital technology age, women should tap into platforms that would give dignity and pride in what they do.
Mrs Nkemdilim Begho, Executive Director, Futuresoft Resources Nigeria Ltd., said that cloud, mobile, big data and social media were technologies that would move the world forward.
She urged women to tap into the industry so that they would move with the tide to enhance their businesses.
“We need to make sure that we build technology businesses so that we will reduce the outsourcing that goes on.
“There is also the need to use technology to build brands that will announce ones existence in business even though it will take time.
“They need to have the opportunity to be driving forces for national growth and they can achieve that when embedded with technology,’’ she said.
Begho added that the only way there would be a sustainable growth in the industry was if there was a balance in the industry.
The SMW is the largest technology, new media and business conference on the continent of Africa.
