Association Concludes Plans On 38th Confab In PH
The Forestry Asso
ciation of Nigeria (FAN) says it has concluded plans to mark its 38th annual conference in Part Harcourt next month.
The Chairman, Lal Organising Committee Sodienye Abere, said FAN will in this year’s conference, consider reasons behind the fast depleting mangroves, wet land etc, as well as its economic implications on the lives of people within the areas.
According to him, the title of the programme: Potential for Sustainable Livelihoods and Development, it is expected to commence from March 7-11, 2016.
Abere who is of the Forestry and Environment of the State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), said the occasion would be in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment all sister Universities in the state that have similar department.
He noted the bleak economic future in the face of decreasing revenue from crude oil, which he said was the country’s major revenue source.
The university don, was of the view that, the activities and operations of the oil and gas industry located mainly in the mangrove forests have led to fragmentation, degradation of the mangrove forest ecosystem.
Such activities he said, have affected aquatic production, wildlife habitats and has hampered resources.
He said that the event will also look at sub schemes like management of fisheries, wildlife mangroves and wetland among others.
The Tide gathered that the event may likely consider the possibility of revamping the country’s revenue base through, fishing and wildlife resources.
