Group Wants FG To Secure Territorial Waters
A group under the
auspices of “Maritime Security Alert and Safety” has called on the Federal Government and the authorities concerned to ensure that the safety of lives and property were given adequate attention within the Nigerian territorial waters.
The group in a statement signed by its President Lanre Ojo and made available to our correspondent in Port Harcourt said the rate of sea piracy, robbery and kidnapping was alarming, saying that it was high time the authorities stepped up their operational activities by patrolling the country’s waterways for safety and security of the marine industry.
The body also noted that seafarers and other marine operators were being kidnapped or traumatized every day, pointing out that records show that from January 14, 2016 till day, over seven attacks have been reported on fishing and other vessels, including that of a maesk line ship, which was attacked on its way to Onne Port.
It also stated that kidnapping on the nation’s sea routes increased to 19 in 2015, while in 2014, only nine cases were recorded, and expressed fears that it might increase if adequate measures were not taken.
According to the group, the activites of sea pirates, robbers, kidnappers and hijackers on the Nigerian waterways is so alarming that it is affecting the sector especially importers and investors stressing that it is now a challenge for the Federal Government and the nation’s Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to put its house together and carry out its statutory functions for the safety of the stakeholders.
