TUC Urges Empowerment of Labour Ministry
Chairman of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Rivers State Council, Comrade Chika Onuegbu, has called on the Federal Government to empower the Ministry of Labour and Productivity to enable it perform its functions effectively.
Making the call in a paper presented at this year’s World Safety Day, with the theme”, “Emerging Risk and New Pattern of Prevention in a Changing World of Work”, he said, also to be included in the empowerment are the Department of Petroleum Resources, (DPR), and other relevant agencies.
Onuegbu, who also called on state government’s to ensure that safety and welfare of workers, said such empowerment is capable of changing the fortunes of workers for the best.
Towards ensuring this, he called on state House of Assembly to enact laws that would protect the rights of workers, while also urging companies to avoid situations that would cause unnecessary stress to their workers.
The TUC boss advised workers to identify with Trade Unions by registering in order to enable them collectively bargain for their right. According to him, “ it is only when workers register with trade union that we, as a body, can protect their interest when every other means may have failed.
Comrade Onuegbu, used the opportunity to advise employers of labour to give junior staff assignments and responsibilities according to their skills, while also ensuring that their health and safety are given priority.
He, thus called for a review and enforcement of labour laws in the country in line with current economic realities.
