Pipeline Vandalism: FG Launches’ Operation AWATSU’
In a renewed effort to check
the activities of oil and gas pipeline vandals across the nation the Federal Government has launched a special military operation, code-named AWATSU.
The Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, who disclosed this to newsmen said the new operation was part of a renewed proactive measures to deal with the vandals sabotaging the economy of the nation through illegal activities.
“You see, we are taking proactive measures. As I speak to you, there is an operation called ‘Operation AWATSU’. We are doing enough in that place if you follow what has been happening,” he said.
Abubakar revealed that in recent time, about 25 persons have been arrested with 50 vehicles in Lagos and emphasized that the operation would sanitise the whole area.
“I believe we will do that because this is a very important axis that cannot be neglected,” he said describing the elements behind the vandalisation as enemies of the country.
He explained that the military took a decision after a meeting between the leadership of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), to maintain a presence at the Arepo area following the killing of four policemen and 11 officials of the Department of State Services by suspected vandals, and remarked that the formation will take all necessary proactive steps to curtail such operations of the vandals in the area.
The Acting Director said that the arrests and the services made by the military were responsible for the recent call by the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, for setting up of special courts to try vandals in the country.
Abubakar said the military had done adequate deployment to ensure the protection of the nation’s pipelines in the country and urged the people of the host communities to the pipelines to cooperate with security operatives in protecting them.
