Tax Payment Attracts Dividends Of Democracy – Expert
A financial expert and
social analyst, Dr. Joshua Jumbo has reiterated that prompt payment of taxes would attract dividends of democracy by the government.
Jumbo, who made this assertion in a chat with Our Correspondent in Port Harcourt at the weekend said the state would experience more infrastructural development if all eligible tax payers pay their taxes promptly and accordingly.
He frowned that most people avoid paying tax but would want the government to provide social amenities like electricity, good water, road network among others, saying that people must learn to pay their taxes promptly in order to enable government provide better services to the masses.
“It is unfortunate that most people including companies indulge in tax invasion, but blamed government for not providing adequate services and amenities to the masses”.
“Foreign countries thrive because they pay their faxes as at when due, and any one who failed to pay faces the full wrath of the government no matter how highly placed”, he further opined.
Jumbo said it is high time all hands were brought on deck as to make the economy viable for more developments and provision of social facilities for the people to enjoy.
According to him, all residents and people doing business in Rivers State and Nigeria in general should think of a productive nation rather than a consuming nation, stressing that with a productive enconmy, there would be employment, development, stability and advancement in all sectors of the economy.
The social analyst further called on all levels of government to compel all tax evaders to reconsider their stand this year 2016 and ensure that they pay their taxes prompt as at when due without government intervention.
He also called for proper accountability of tax payers’ money at the end of every season, so that the people would have confidence on the government and pay their taxes without any persuation.

BVN Enrolments Rise 6% To 67.8m In 2025 — NIBSS
The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) has said that Bank Verification Number (BVN) enrolments rose by 6.8 per cent year-on-year to 67.8 million as at December 2025, up from 63.5 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2024.
In a statement published on its website, NIBSS attributed the growth to stronger policy enforcement by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the expansion of diaspora enrolment initiatives.
NIBSS noted that the expansion reinforces the BVN system’s central role in Nigeria’s financial inclusion drive and digital identity framework.
Another major driver, the statement said, was the rollout of the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) initiative, which allows Nigerians in the diaspora to obtain a BVN remotely without physical presence in the country.
A five-year analysis by NIBSS showed consistent growth in BVN enrolments, rising from 51.9 million in 2021 to 56.0 million in 2022, 60.1 million in 2023, 63.5 million in 2024 and 67.8 million by December 2025. The steady increase reflects stronger compliance with biometric identity requirements and improved coverage of the national banking identity system.
However, NIBSS noted that BVN enrolments still lag the total number of active bank accounts, which exceeded 320 million as of March 2025.
The gap, it explained, is largely due to multiple bank accounts linked to single BVNs, as well as customers yet to complete enrolment, despite the progress recorded.
