Traders Urge RSG To Rebuild Burnt Market
Traders in Rumuwoji Market,
popularly known as Mike I Market have appealed to the government to expedite action in rebuilding the market.
Some of the traders who spoke to our correspondent recently in Port Harcourt expressed concern over the continuous delay in rebuilding the market years after it was gutted by fire
Mr. Afiye Akin, a butcher who now sells by the roadside near the market expressed worry that the Rivers Sate government was yet to fulfill its promise after they had been given assurance on the reconstruction of the market some months ago.
Charity Williams, a rice dealer attributed the delay in the reconstruction of the market to confidence. She expressed that Governor Nyesom Wike-led administration would complete reconstruction of the market.
Mr.Idris Adamu , a yam dealer said that after the disaster, things had never been the same for him and his colleagues and appealed to the government to come to their aid.
Also, speaking, a member of the Mile I Market Traders Association (MOMTA), Celestine Ogbonna said that the reason why they were not troubling the Governor was because he had not really settled down, saying “when he is balanced, if nothing is being done, then the MOMTA will take action.”
It could be recalled that the market was gutted by fire on September 17 2013 and the Rivers State Government has completed and handed over to the traders some blocks of stalls while the second phase of the project is yet to be executed.
Owing to this development, some traders who remained displaced now sell by the roadside as against the order of the Port Harcourt City Council on street trading.
