Complaints Commission Plans Schools Ombudsman Clubs
The Public Complaints Commission(PCC) in Rivers State, has hinted of plans to commence Ombudsman Clubs in various secondary schools across the state.
State Commissioner of the PCC, in the Dr. Alpheaus Paul-Worika in a chat with The Tide said the plan is to raise awareness about the commission and to sensitise students on the need to learn alternative dispute resolution.
The commission also plans to revive its state zonal offices in Bonny, Ahoada, Bori and Degema.
According to him, the commission’s functions and status are enshrined in the constitution with the powers to investigate activities of government agencies, companies, make public reports and interpret policy and advise governments.
Dr. Paul-Worika lamented that most members of the public have failed to use the services of the PCC, noting that its mandate covers many areas that touch citizens rights, maladministration by government officials and even companies.
“Since I came into office we have treated over three cases where workers and their employers have settled and salaries and pensions paid to them.”
He however, said that the body does not use force but dialogue with parties with the aim of redressing matters.
On the other hand, he explained that the PCC can compel an individual or body to appear using law enforcement agents in cases where parties fail to report to the commission
As part of efforts to meet current challenges and keying into the anti-corruption crusade of the President Buhari administration, the federal commissioner disclosed that efforts to synergise with other federal agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices.Commission(ICPC) and Code of Conduct Bureau are being worked out.
“ The need for reforms in the PCC is being looked into. We have learnt from other countries like Kenya that the Ombudsman is doing well there,” Worika stated.
