Stakeholders Decry Edo Govt, Drivers’ Face-Off
Stakeholders in the building industry in Edo State have complained that the face-off between the state government and the Tipper Drivers’ Association in the state has brought untold hardship to them.
The block moulders, sand dealers and cement sellers, expressed their feelings about the disagreement in separate interviews with our correspondent in Benin yesterday.
It would be recalled that the appointment of a sole agent by the state government for the collection of haulage fees from the tipper drivers resulted in a strike by members of the association.
A sand dealer, said that since August when the association embarked on strike, Mr Osadebamwen Osamuyi and his family had been experiencing hardship because he had not been earning any income.
Osamuyi said that he had no other regular means of livelihood apart from buying and selling sand.
“It is about two months since we embarked on strike and I have exhausted all my savings and my family is suffering.
“It is affecting me badly and I do not have a choice other than to farm for the time being, so that I and my family will not die of hunger,” he said
A block moulder, Mr Emmanuel Gabriel, also stated that since the strike, he had not been supplied sand with which to mould blocks for sale.
Gabriel said he had lost all his customers as a result.
According to him, he normally moulded not less than 3000 blocks every week which he sold at the rate of 600 for N9,000.
He said he was no longer in business and now survived by the grace of God.
Mr Okoh God-bless, a cement seller, lamented that his sales had dropped drastically because residents no longer had easy supply of sand to mix with cement for various purposes.
