FRSC Tasks Motorists On Safe Driving
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Anambra, Mr Sunday Ajayi, on Tuesday urged motorists to imbibe safe driving as a way of life.
Ajayi told the our correspondent in Awka that the level of compliance with traffic laws was getting higher by the day, attributing the development to the quality of enforcement and robust public enlightenment.
The commander commended the resolve of various transport stakeholders, especially petroleum tankers and other articulated vehicle drivers to key into the policy of the FRSC.
Ajayi said that unlike before when they saw the FRSC as rivals, the unions now realised that their contribution was vital to the efforts to keep the roads safe for everybody.
“That does not mean we have achieved 100 per cent sanity; we still have much to do because safety is a way of life.
“Our next task is to see that people digest and internalise this safety culture.
“The fact that tankers and articulated vehicle drivers now realise they have a role to play is a great advantage to the crusade for safer roads. They are now interested in the condition of their vehicles.
“The owners monitor the kind of drivers they engage and ensure that the minimum safety conditions are met before they load,’’ he said.
The commander also said that the commission would continue to appeal to people to comply with the rules without necessarily being forced to do so.
“Safety starts with individuals and it is for their own good. We will like a situation where we make little or no arrest because of traffic disobedience.’’
Ajayi urged drivers to be careful during the ‘ember’ months so that they could live to celebrate the season.
