FRSC Commences Light Enforcement Of Speed Limits
The Federal Road
Safety commission (FRSC), says it has commenced ‘light enforcement’ and aggressive sensitisation on the issue of installation of Speed Limiting Device (SLD) in commercial vehicles in the country.
Corps Public Education Officer of the commission, Mr Imoh Etuk, made this known in an interview with newsmen in Abuja yesterday.
He said that the commission was embarking on the exercise to ensure that motorists embraced the speed limit device and appreciate its benefits in safeguarding lives.
“Enforcement of installation of SLD is not to punish motorists, but a joint decision of major stakeholders in the road transport sector to reduce speed related crashes on roads.
“Speed is the most common cause of crashes on our roads, and the perpetrators cut across both private and commercial drivers.
“We are still carrying out public enlightenment on the need to install SLD in vehicles by motorists across the country and it’s been embraced by lot of them.
“Those that are yet to comply are being sensitised by our men on patrol on the need to do so.
“The full enforcement will start with commercial drivers because they convey more people and goods on the roads, compared to their private counterparts,” he said.
Etuk however did say not when the light enforcement would give way to full enforcement of the policy.
NAN recalls that the enforcement of the device on commercial motorists was to begin on June 1 but shifted to Sept. 1, due to series of appeal by commercial vehicle owners.
