The place of women in the administration of Rivers State under the leadership of Chief Nyesom Wike is no longer in the dark as the Governor of the State, Chief Nyesom Wike, has made public his intention to engage more women in delivering quality service to the state.
Using the occasion of the 2015 Civil Service Day Celebration in Port Harcourt, Governor Wike explained that just recently, five females out of twelve of his appointees were elevated to the position of permanent secretaries, while assuring women of a fair share in the appointment of commissioners and other key positions in his cabinet.
In his continuous assurance of a pride of place for the Rivers women in the scheme of affairs in the state, the governor hailed the theme of this year’s Civil Service Day Celebrations, “The role of the public service in women’s empowerment, innovation and accessible service delivery,” as apt and timely because it captures a vision of his administration which is hinged on reforming and repositioning the state civil service for efficient and effective service.
He pointed out that a strategic component of this effort is the empowerment of women through corporate initiatives for the building of strong families to enable women play key roles in the development of the state.
It will be recalled that Chief Wike had said, during his electioneering campaign that his choice of a female running mate was informed by the need to crate a special place for women to play active role in the politics of the state.
