Operation Zero Potholes Programme, A Commendable Initiative -Elder Statesman
A pioneer Agitator of the derivation principle for oil producing states and evangelist, Dr. Sokari Soberekon has described Governor Nyesom Wike’s potholes programme as better than road construction projects embarked upon by previous administration in the state.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, Dr. Soberekon said that the initiative has shown judicious utilization of derivation money, adding that it also showed that the struggle of those who fought for the derivation would never be in vain.
The elder statesman who insisted that he is not a member of any political party in the state accused past administrations in the state of squandering all monies collected in the name of derivation, stressing that this time around, people are now seeing that his agitation was not in vain.
He also expressed the hope that this time around, Governor Wike will recognize individual contributions of those who fought to ensure that the state benefitted from oil production.
“I have not sniffed the flowers for 23 years, but with Wike, I will do it”, he said.
The elder statesman also stressed the need for the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to give a listening ear to the cry of the Niger Delta for resource control and 50 per cent derivation to compensate for the long years of environmental degradation occasioned by oil pollution in the region.
While describing former President Goodluck Jonathan as a detribalized Nigeria, Dr. Soberekon also called for the removal of the portrait of Murtala Muhammade from the twenty Naira note and replacement with that of Aminu Kanu, Shehu Yar-Adua.
According to him, Aminu Kanu is a detribalized and patriotic Nigerian who deserved to be immotalised.
