Residents of
Ikpukulu Ama, a fishing settlement behind Government Comprehensive Secondary School, Borikiri in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area of Rivers State, have expressed worry over this year’s intensity of rainfall.
Spokesman of the settlement, Mr Alaso Nyanso in an interview with The Tide feared that with the heavy rains and associated floods,  their buildings would be washed away.
Nyanso, stated that the water level usually rises above normal levels each time the rains are heavy, thereby threatening their shelters and livelihood.
He lamented that the water at such high level would submerge their fish smoking huts and their shelters, and inflict untold hardship on them.
He noted that flooding was a problem they faced every rainy season and lamented the cost of rebuilding their destroyed buildings.
He also complained about the debris deposited at the banks of the river after the recession of the rains, and frowned at the improper waste disposal habits of residents of Port Harcourt.
He blamed the flooding problem on the lack of drainages to help channel the water away and the blocking of the creeks with debris.
He appealed to the government to construct water channels and charged residents of the state on proper waste disposal.
