PH Residents Call For More Tourist Sites In Rivers
Some residents of Obio/
Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State have appealed to the state government to establish tourist sites within the area that would provide the people recreational opportunities.
In separate interviews with The Tide, the residents have argued that there is no known tourist site for recreation within the LGA given the level of development and influx of people to the area.
A civil servant residing at Rumuekini axis of Akpor, Mrs Olukemi Ishola, said the state stands the chance of generating huge revenue from the establishment and operation of tourist sites in the LGA.
She said government could go into partnership with private investors to accomplish this goal, adding that some residents catch fun on distant recreational sites.
For Mr Alfred Nwakwo, the tourist site may not be the sole responsibility of government, but believed that government could go into partnership with the private sector.
He said that the state government could provide recreational environment around the Greater Port Harcourt City Development authority (GPHCDA) area for investors to harness and then design the profit-sharing method for the business.
“There are good number of private investors who are interested and are endowed with the technical knowledge on tourist sites construction. We want government to provide enabling environments and rules of engagement of them to operate,” Nwankwo said.
But a community leader, Mr. Cletus Worlu, expressed dissatisfaction over the conversion of a vast land procured by the state government for zoo, to a residential area.
Worlu noted that the land along the Rumuosi axis of the East/West road earmarked for zoo and tourism site but later converted to GRA Phase 5 could be used to develop a tourist site in the area.
Another resident, Nathan Okoro who shared the view for government to erect some relaxation centres within the area, note that life was becoming boring to him for lack of where to recreate and catch fun.
