Momoh Lists Challenges To Democracy
Former Minister of Information and Culture Tony Momoh has identified the attitude of taking from the nation rather than giving as the greatest challenge to the sustenance of democracy.
Momoh made the remark in Lagos on Saturday at the 2010 Rosicrucian Order, AMORC, Lagos Zonal Public seminar at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja.
According to him, the country has people who are interested in what they can get for themselves and not what they can contribute to develop the country. “There is more of taking than giving and we must show how we can entrench a system that grows the populace, bearing in mind that there is no way there can be that growth unless those doing the growing have themselves grown,’’ he said. The former minister observed that with a population of about 150 million people, less than 18,000 public officers spend more than half of the recurrent vote nationwide on their emoluments. “We already have 36 weak states as federating units in an arrangement in which the motto is sharing, than taking. “How do we secure the welfare and security of the citizens which is the main purpose of government, if we seek our own security and welfare first?,’’ he queried.
Also speaking at the event, the President of AMORC, Nigeria, Dr Kenneth Idiodi, called on people in positions of authority to place the nation above themselves.
Idiodi said that democracy would be sustained in Nigeria if people in positions of authority could serve the nation without thinking of what they would gain. The theme for the seminar was “Sustaining the Nation’s Democracy: Challenges, Hopes and People Issue’’.
