Fish Farmers Complain Of Difficulty In Accessing Loans
The National
Secretary, Cat Fish Farmers Association of Nigeria (CAFFAN), Chief Rotimi Onibale, has lamented what he called “unfriendly attitude” of the banking sector to give loans to farmers.
Onibale also berated civil servants for not assisting the right people to get soft loans provided to farmers by the government.
He spoke recently in Ibadan, in an interview with newsmen.
Onibale said that members of the association were faced with a lot of challenges in the course of their business.
“In every production, you need credit to assist you , but we have a very bad credit system for farmers in Nigeria” he said.
He also said that the civil servants who are in charge of issuing loans to catfish farmers have not assisted them in anyway; rather those who are not farmers are the beneficiaries.
“Civil servants who are directly in charge of giving loans to farmers, don’t give the right people.
“They rather include the names of their friends, families and colleagues who are not farmers, whenever there are incentives from government to assist farmers,’’ he said.
Onibale also commended the former Minister of Agriculture, Dr Akinwunmi Adesina, for his support to aquaculture.
“We had the best support from him. Since I have been in office, that is the best support we have ever received and I hope it continues in this new government,” he said.
The CAFFAN secretary, however, appealed to government for continual support to farmers, adding that government should always ensure they reach out to genuine farmers.
