Chevron Anti-Union Issues: NUPENG Threatens Nation-wide Strite
The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural gas Workers (NUPENG) has threatened to embark on industrial action, which definitely would result in another round of fuel scarcity, if the sacked Chairman of the union in Chevron Chapter is not reinstated amongst other conditions.
The union alleged that NUPENG Chairman, Chevron Chapter, Comrade Shabi Dada, was sacked for no just reason.
It also wants the collective bargaining Agreement (CBA) reached between the union and the Chevron management in 2012 to be revisited and issue of casualisation in the firm to be properly addressed.
The Lagos Zonal Chairman of NUPENG, Comrade Tokumbo Korodo, described the sacking of the union Chairman in its Chevron Chapter as an affront to the union explaining that several calls for his reinstatement has been made by the union since 2012 when he was sacked.
He also stated that contract staff of Chevron had been on strike for nearly two weeks now in order to press home some of these demands from the management of the oil company.
According to the union boss, the contract workers had been under the control of six contractors about three years ago noting that the existing collective Bargaining with the former contractor was cancelled by the company management who imposed a new one without any input from the union.
“We have been agitating for the revisit of these issues and they made us understand that the contract is also coming to an end by December this year”, he said, adding that while the issue was going on, some members of the union had been penciled down for retirement and termination of appointment.
Korodo explained that all efforts to have listening ear from the management had continued to prove abortive hence the renewed agitation.
The union called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene as the national strike which is eminent could negatively affect the socio-economic life in the nation.
“If noting is done, the union will be forced to ask other branches of NUPENG to embark on strike to press home these demands and there would be another scarcity because of this”, NUPENG boss said.

Blue Economy: Minister Seeks Lifeline In Blue Bond Amid Budget Squeeze

Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy is seeking new funding to implement its ambitious 10-year policy, with officials acknowledging that public funding is insufficient for the scale of transformation envisioned.
Adegboyega Oyetola, said finance is the “lever that will attract long-term and progressive capital critical” and determine whether the ministry’s goals take off.
“Resources we currently receive from the national budget are grossly inadequate compared to the enormous responsibility before the ministry and sector,” he warned.
He described public funding not as charity but as “seed capital” that would unlock private investment adding that without it, Nigeria risks falling behind its neighbours while billions of naira continue to leak abroad through freight payments on foreign vessels.
He said “We have N24.6 trillion in pension assets, with 5 percent set aside for sustainability, including blue and green bonds,” he told stakeholders. “Each time green bonds have been issued, they have been oversubscribed. The money is there. The question is, how do you then get this money?”
The NGX reckons that once incorporated into the national budget, the Debt Management Office could issue the bonds, attracting both domestic pension funds and international investors.
Yet even as officials push for creative financing, Oloruntola stressed that the first step remains legislative.
“Even the most innovative financial tools and private investments require a solid public funding base to thrive.
It would be noted that with government funding inadequate, the ministry and capital market operators see bonds as alternative financing.
