Sylva Harps On Development Journalism
Media practitioners in the country have been advised to embrace development journalism instead of unnecessary sensational stories that do not help the society.
Governor Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa State, who gave the charge when the executive members of the States Independent Publishers Association (IPA) paid him a courtesy call at Government House, Yenagoa, described media practitioners as mirror of the society.
Sylva tasked journalists to be impartial and always tell the truth by presenting facts instead of fictions if they are to be respected.
“Rather than write stories that will divide the people and bring down leaders, journalists should concentrate on promoting issues that would facilitate progress and development, Chief Sylva stated.
According to him, the state has many positive things to offer the world, but wondered why journalists only harp on the negative ones.
He advised journalists especially those of Ijaw extractions to write things that would potray the tribe in good light and promised to assist the association within limits of available resources.
The chairman of BIPA, Mr Ebi Ozegbe had earlier commended the governor for his achievement and requested an upward review of the stipends given to the assocaiton, and also assist a member of the organisation, Mr Union Ogadongha, the publisher of Banner News whose office was gutted by fire last year.
