N’Delta Activist Wants Review Of Pipeline Contracts
A Niger Delta human rights activist, Comrade John Worlu, has called on the president-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, to revisit the pipeline surveillance contracts awarded by the Federal Government via the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to some contractors in the area.
The activist, who spoke in an exclusive interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, Sunday said the Buhari-led Federal government should act promptly in order to avert any agitation that may affect the oil industry.
He said precaution should be taken before re-awarding the pipeline contracts to avoid clash among the contractors as witnessed in the present administration.
Worlu, recalled that some contractors who felt short-changed in the process, protested against the deal, thereby, disrupting oil and gas activities.
He suggested balloting among the contractors to ensure transparency in the process, saying the former handlers of the contract were not transparent.
He recalled that some major pipelines in the Niger Delta were attacked sometime last month as a result of the agitation by some of the short-changed contractors.
Worlu who is also a community leader, charged the Buhari-led administration to work out modalities that will address the issue of host-communities and oil companies’ relationship to enhance smooth operation in the communities.
According to him, it would not be proper to still watch members of the oil and gas host communities wallow in poverty while staff of the oil and gas companies live intimidating affluence.
Though, he refused to comment on the rumoured scrapping of the Niger Delta Development Commission by Buhari upon his swearing in, but said that a ministry or commission to handle the Niger Delta affairs must be on the ground to oversee the challenges of the oil producing communities.
While swing for peace and understanding among the contractors, he also called on them to unite in order to form a formidable force.
