C’ttee Blames Violence Against Women On Insecurity

State Observatory Committee (OBSTEC) on Violence Against Women and Girls, Barrister Florence Fiberesima, has blamed rampant cases of violence against women in Nigeria on insecurity in the country.
Barrister Fiberesima stated this during an advocacy visit to the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
According to her, inherent harmful traditional practices and beliefs practised by various segments of the country also form part of violence against the women.
The OBSTEC’s chairperson explained some of the harmful traditional practices including female genital mutilation, widowhood practices, wife battery and domestic marital violence.
“Violence against women and girls also include what has happened to the Chibok girls, some of whom have been raped, brutally murdered, tortured and made to pass through dehumanizing experiences.
“Most of these experience are made possible because they are girls, and are dangerous to their health. Most of these girls can never be the persons they were before again”, she said.
Also speaking, the Chairman, Medical Women Association, Rivers State, Dr Obelebra Adebiyi, who is also a member of OBSTEC noted, that the determination for a reduction and gradual extinction of any form of violence against women and girls is one of the key objectives of OBSTEC.
This development, she said prompted the body to seek participation and support of NOA towards achieving its set objective.
In his response, the state Director of NOA Mr. Oliver Wolugbom assured members of OBSTEC of support, noting that “to orientate the populace on given societal issues is actually what NOA stands for.
“The issue of wife battery, violence against women and girls generally, is not actually new to us. But now that we have an opportunity as groups to work towards checking the trend, we shall give it our best shot”, he said.
To enhance free flow of information between NOA and the OBSTEC, Wolugbom appointed the Head of Social Justice Unit of NOA, Miss Bridget Idemyor to work closely with OBSTEC and identify areas that NOA could intervene.

The Rivers State Judiciary has denied a media report claiming that Justice Frank Onyiri of the State High Court issued an injunction order restraining the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), from inaugurating the newly appointed members of the Rivers State Civil Service Commission (RSCSC).
In a statement issued by the Deputy Chief Registrar in charge of litigation at the High Court, Menenen Poromon (Esq), the state Judiciary disassociated itself from the report, describing it as malicious and fabricated.
The statement emphasized that the report was a falsehood and a misrepresentation of what transpeared in the court.
Poromon clarified that no such order was issued by Justice Onyiri or any other judge of the High Court of the state and urged the public to disregard the information, as it lacked any iota of truth.
The statement however advised the public to verify any information concerning the state Judiciary directly from the office of the Chief Registrar, High Court of the State, to avoid spreading of misinformation.
