Captain Charges President-Elect On National Carrier
The in-coming Gen
Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd)-led Federal Government has been called upon to give priority attention to the maritime sector especially in ensuring the revival of the Nigerian National Shipping Line (NNSL) as a national carrier.
A stakeholder in the maritime sector and a retired Captain, Elder Johnson Tokubie, made the call in an interview with journalists in Port Harcourt on Monday.
Tokubie said the need for the in-coming administration to accord priority to the maritime sector cannot be over-emphasised, as it is a booster to the nation’s economy and creates employment opportunities for the teeming unemployed persons in the country.
The stakeholder said with all the potential and more graduating from the various maritime institutes, the re-invigoration of the national carrier would no doubt be of great assistance to the society, stressing that Nigeria, a maritime hub in Africa would stand to benefit more in the global maritime sector, as it would also generate foreign exchange earnings and relationship with their counterparts.
He maintained that such would as well encourage the numerous freight forwarders in the country to patronize the nation’s carrier, because it would be cheaper and more convenient than shipping their cargoes into Nigeria through the foreign lines.
According to him, it would reduce cost of importation of goods and things would begin to be cheaper in the markets.
He reiterated that the reintroduction of NNSL would increase efficiency, boost international trade and also transform the economy for the better as the government of General Buhari is an agent of change in all sectors including maritime.
Tokubie however commended the out-going administration of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for his transformation of the sector, adding that it had actually impacted positive developments and progress in the sub-sector.
