Students of Rivers State
College of Health Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, have protested over the poor level of infrastructure in the institution.
The students barricaded the main entrance of the college chanting with placards, thus, bringing academic activities to a halt.
Speaking to journalists on behalf of the students, Comrade Ogolo Muyodhuzhi enumerated the various challenges faced by the students.
Ogolo said, “there are no adequate toilet system”, electricity, water and hostels.
He pointed out that the institution was not conducive for learning, saying that most of the rooms were currently over-crowded with over 12 students per room.
Also speaking, the Secretary of the Students Union Government (SUG), Okeke Samuel, said he was supposed to be having exams that morning but there was no water for him to take his bath.
He wondered why an institution of that standard would be making use of the mono-pump, and called on the state government to come to their aid.
Addressing the students, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Students Affairs, Tamuno Osika, mandated the school authorities to address the issue of sanitary condition of the institution within 48 hours.
Osika stated that the state government would never compromise the welfare of the students, while thanking them for their peaceful disposition during the protest. Earlier in his speech, the Provost of the school, Dr Nnamdi Amadi, assured the students that immediate action would be taken to address their demands.
