Edo Govt Not Indebted – Oshiomhole
Gov. Adams Oshiomhole says the Edo Government is not indebted to any financial institution.
The governor made the statement on Friday when he received the national executive of the National Association of Edo State Students, who presented a “Role Model” award to him in Benin.
“We inherited a debt of N10 billion of which N5 billion was an overdraft and the other N5 billion in contracts allegedly awarded but not paid for,’’ the governor said.
He said the government had enough money to liquidate all the credit the government took in 2009.
Oshiomhole said the government had made arrangements with financial institutions to make sure ongoing projects would not be affected in case “there is a major shock.’’
He said the government was accountable and transparent, adding: “We are stewards of the people and have the obligation to inform them of government’s activities and actions.”
He said contractors were working on various projects.
“Health centres are being built, rural communities are being connected to electricity and boreholes are being sunk across the three senatorial districts,” the governor said.
He said the government was aggressively pursuing the building of primary and post-primary schools as the future of the state depended on the quality of education available to the people.
“Every child may not become a graduate, every child may not become a doctor or an engineer but every child is entitled to a sound basic education,” Oshiomhole said.
He said the government had begun the refurbishment of primary and post-primary schools and urged the association to join hands with the government in restoring the integrity of education in the state.
