Jonathan Congratulates F’Eagles On AYC Title
President Goodluck
Jonathan has congratulated the Flying Eagles on their victory against hosts Senegal in the final match of the 2015 African Youth Championship (AYC) played on Sunday in Dakar.
According to a statement in Abuja on Monday by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, President Jonathan joined other football-loving Nigerians in applauding the Flying Eagles’ glorious triumph over their Senegalese opponents.
“This is in spite of the fact that Senegal, as tournament hosts, played in the final match with the vociferous backing of a partisan home crowd,’’ Jonathan said in the statement.
It quoted him as telling the team that all Nigerians were “very proud of their magnificent, all-conquering performance” in the tournament, which earned the country a record seventh AYC success.
The statement said also that President Jonathan promised the Flying Eagles of Federal Government’s full backing in their forthcoming participation in the 2015 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand. “This is in line with my administration’s policy of giving Nigeria’s sports men and women the greatest possible support and encouragement, which has resulted in the country’s recent successes in international competitions.
“I therefore look forward to receiving the team at my earliest convenience on their return from Senegal, to honour them for bringing more sporting glory to their fatherland,” it quoted Jonathan as saying.
