Police Commissioner Harps On Co-operation With PCRC
The Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, Mr. Suleiman Abba has reiterated the command’s desire to partner with members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) to achieve set goals.
Mr. Abba gave the assurance when executives of PCRC, Rivers State command, paid him a courtesy call in his office at the command’s headquarters, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt recently.
He said the rank and file of the command will give their cooperation and partnership to the members and the public in order to ensure protection of lives and property, as well as maintenance of law and order.
According to him, efforts would be intensified ensure that Divisional Police Officers in the state and Area Commands attend PCRC meetings in order to sensitize them on the need to “work hand-in-glove” with members of the body.
Earlier, the National Vice Chairman, South-South, Hon. D.K. Bardon harped on ability to strike a balance between all ranks and files of the police and the public, and also frowned at the police extorting money from the public saying nationwide, “it is not good for the image of the force”.
Hon. Bardon called on the commissioner to further advise the rank of files of the police to give members at PCRC special attention, noting that they (PCRC) are representatives of the public.
He said all hands need be on deck to ensure that the Community Police Project (CPP) works, pointing out that the concept, when fully implemented, would “boil down to community policing”.
Also speaking, the state Chairman of PCRC, Hon. Austain Yong thanked the police boss for ensuring free and fair elections that brought the present Exco to power, and stressed the need for electoral officers nationwide to borrow a leaf.
Hon. Yong said although Rivers State was yet to be a pilot state of the CPP, hardwork on the part of stakeholders can ensure its success in the state. He thus called for collaboration between the police and members of PCRC.
He disclosed that the body would soon carry out a training programme for members on the duties of PCRC, urging the commissioner for cooperation to make the programme a success.
