Auto Policy: RTEAN Seeks Extention Of Commencement Date
The federal government
has been called upon to grant another six months extension to the full implementation of the National Automotive Policy in the country.
The National President of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Alhaji Musa Shehu, made the call while addressing newsmen in Abuja on Thursday.
Shehu said the appeal was necessary in order to help in reducing the bottlenecks in vehicular movement of commuters and to boost the transportation system in the country.
He disclosed that the association also urged the Federal Government for a 70 per cent waiver on over 4,000 commuter vehicles as well as those of high capacity buses that would be imported into the country.
According to him, “The initiative is coming at a time when the federal government is discouraging importation of vehicles and encouraging local manufacturing of vehicles in the country.
“We support the Federal Government’s automotive policy but we are still appealing that local manufacturers cannot meet the demand of our nation at the moment.
The National President said they are in support of the Federal Government’s Policy on automotive as they are running a nationwide mass transit scheme in which most of the vehicles will be dedicated to people of low income at a lower price.
Shehu said the scheme was to support President Goodluck Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda on Transportation for the benefit of the people of this country.
He however appealed to the public to support the scheme and the government for better road transport system in Nigeria.
