EFCC’s Arrests: Sylva, Absolves Jonathan
Governor Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa says Acting President Goodluck Jonathan has no hand in EFCC’s arrest of three officials of the state government.
Sylva made the statement on arrival inYenagoa on Friday with the three officials after they were granted bail by an Abuja Federal High Court.
He dismissed claims in certain quarters that the Acting President orchestrated the clamp down on the officials.
“I will like to use this opportunity to correct the erroneous impression that the Acting President was behind the travails of these people.
“I have personally spoken with the Acting President many times and I really believe that he does not have a hand in what is happening in Bayelsa.
“There are a lot of name droppers who probably used my name to do all kinds of things,’’ the governor said .
He advised Bayelsans to make sure they fight name droppers to prevent them from using the names of “highly-placed Nigerians and great sons of Bayelsa like the Acting President and associate their names with crimes and atrocities’’.
“I stand firmly with the Acting President no matter the divisive intrusions of all these people who have considered themselves closer to the acting president than every one of us,” the governor said.
On the arrest of the officials, Sylva said: “My position has always been that the EFCC has a responsibility to fight corruption and it should be properly done.
“But they must make sure they adopt due process. If they arrest some people for some alleged offences, it is their job to prove these allegations in the law court.
“Unfortunately, these ones were held a little bit longer than necessary which necessitated my movement to Abuja. And through the instrumentality of the law, we have been able to secure their release and, of course, return them to Bayelsa.”
The officials are Mr Francis Okukoro, the state Accountant General; Mr Abott Clinton, Director of Treasury and his predecessor, Mr Anthony Ikhoboh.
