NIRA Registers 18,870 Domain Names
The Nigeria Internet
Registration Association (NIRA) says it registered 18,870 new domain names, renewed 11,904 and transferred 765 to the .ng domain in 2014.
This is contained in a statement signed by the association’s president Mrs Mary Uduma, and made available to newsmen recently in Lagos.
The statement said NIRA registered 1,425 new names in January 2014 and 1,498 in February.
“Through its registrars, 2,317 domain names were created in the month of March, 1,691 in April, 1,408 in May, 1,335 names in June and 1,402 for the month of July.
“The month of August recorded 1,437 new names, while the figure increased to 1,531 in the month of September.
“There were 1,581 registrations in the months of October 1, 742 in November and 1,503 in December.
“The month of December 2014 recorded a drop in the .ng domain name purchase activities by the registrants as one can guess that domain names are not popular gift items.
“There was a slight decrease in the number of domain names renewed in December 2014, mainly due to the Christmas and New Year celebrations,” the association said.
“We, however, renewed in all a total of 11,904 domain names for 2014.
“Interestingly, there was a remarkable increase in the transfer window, as 765 domain names were transferred to the .ng domain as at December 31, 2014.”
The statement, however, attributed the increase in the transfer of domains to the entrance of new registrars.
“The number of NIRA accredited registrars remained at 47 with some applications for Registrar’s registration undergoing processing,” it said.
