Power Supply: FG Gets Kudos
Secretary-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA),Dr Abdul-Lateef Adegbite, has commended the Federal Government for the recent improvement in power supply.
Adegbite gave the commendation in an interview with The Tide’s recently in Abeokuta.
“I don’t know if this is coincidence, but I have noticed marked improvement in the power supply since Dr Goodluck Jonathan became Acting President about a month ago.
“This is a sign of brighter days ahead because if power supply is improved, the economy will turn around.
“Look at the petrol too, the long queues in petrol stations have disappeared and people are now going in freely, filling their tanks and getting out without wasting time,” he said. He, however, urged the Acting President to look into the issue of political reform critically and accede to the yearnings of people by making the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), “truly independent”.
Adegbite criticised the National Assembly for rejecting the recommendation of the Muhammadu Uwais Electoral Reform Commission that the chairman and members of INEC should be appointed by the National Judiciary Commission (NJC).
According to him, the action of the Senate can unnecessarily over heat the polity, as civil society groups were already staging protests against its stand on the issue of electoral reforms.
“If the Senate doesn’t reverse its decision, it will amount to Nigeria seating on a keg of gun powder, and we must not allow the situation to degenerate into that,” Adegbite added.
