RSG Gets Pass Mark For Sanitation
The Rivers State Govern
ment through the Rivers State Ministry of Environment, has received an average mark for the high level of sanitation consciousness among residents of Port Harcourt city and its environs this year.
Across section of residents who spoke The Tide in Port Harcourt, said that for this year, the government deserves above average mark for creating the awareness on environment sanitation.
They said that even without supervision, people on their own now come out to desilt their drains and gutters.
Speaking with The Tide, the Chairman, Environment Sanitation Marshalls volunteen Prince Sodin Akiagba, attributed the feat to the able leaderships of the Commissioner for Environment and the Permanent Secretary. Prince Akaigba who described the consciousness of Rivers people in sanitation activities as very high said that he was surprised to see that in the last two months, without sanitation exercise, people came out on their own to do desilting, stressing that this situation was never seen before in the state.
He used the occasion to commend the organized private sector and market traders for adhering to the Thursday sanitation exercise. Prince Akiagba stressed the need for the enforcement of sanitation exercises next year, stressing that the city of Port Harcourt is being congested with rural urban migrants noting that people are coming into the city with all kinds of attitude which if not properly handled will negatively effect the gains achieved over the years interms of sanitation in the city.
Another respondent, Prince William Chinwo, urged for the involvement of local government councils in cleanup exercise.
He said that council chairmen and others in charge of Abattoir and markets should not leave sanitation to State Government alone.
