PH Residents Demand Better Toilet Facilities
As Rivers State joined
the rest of the world to mark World Toilet Day last Wednesday, residents of Port Harcourt and environs have urged for the provision of better toilet facilities across the city.
A cross section of residents who spoke to The Tide said that the situation would help to check indiscriminate defecations across the city.
Some of the residents also lamented the deplorable condition of waterfronts noting that residents of those areas need to be sensitised on the hazards of indiscriminate defecation.
In her reaction, a Newspaper vendor, Miss Gloria Thompson said that there is need for a taskforce to check the indiscriminate dumping of feaces along the roads.
Thompson said that, the habit was fast turning the city into an eyesore stressing that men were the major culprits of the unlawful act.
According to her, this act is mostly perpetrated by men as they are seen relieving themselves along fences and gutters.
Also speaking, Mr. Chinedu Winners said that in some parts of the city people are getting sick everyday because of stench from feaces.
Winners however said that, the situation can be checked if the government embarks on the construction of public toilet facilities at strategic locations across the city.
According to him government for now cannot enforce only rules and regulations as there are not enough toilet facilities to take care of the needs of the people.
On his part, the Caretaker Chairman of Bayelsa Park, Mr. Olivier Udoh who admitted the existence of a public toilet at the park, however said that government has abandoned its maintenance to some people.
Mr. Udoh stressed the need for the government to provide equipment for the cleaning of the toilet facility.
