Shettima Credits Tinubu With Saving Nigeria From Economic Collapse

Published

on

Vice President Kashim Shettima has declared that President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms saved Nigeria from imminent economic collapse and prevented the country from “falling into pieces.”

Mr Shettima made the assertion on Saturday after meeting with President Tinubu at his residence in Ikoyi, Lagos, where he defended some of the administration’s most controversial economic decisions.

The Vice President said the country’s foreign reserves stood at less than $3.9 billion when the Tinubu administration assumed office in 2023, arguing that the situation left Nigeria dangerously close to economic crisis.

According to him, the reserves were insufficient to finance even one month of fuel imports, while the economy was already heading towards the kind of crisis experienced by countries such as Venezuela.

“When we assumed the mantle of leadership, our foreign reserves were a staggering below $3.9 billion that was not enough to import fuel for one month,” Mr Shettima said.

He credited President Tinubu with having the “courage and conviction” to implement far-reaching measures, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy and the reform of the multiple exchange-rate system.

“The withdrawal of the fuel subsidy, the realignment of the multiple exchange rate were far-reaching decisions. The economy was actually on the verge of collapse. He saved the economy,” the Vice President said.

Mr Shettima further declared: “We were on the road to Caracas. He saved our economy; he saved the nation from falling into pieces.”

The Vice President, however, acknowledged the economic hardship confronting Nigerians, saying the administration was aware of the pains caused by its reforms.

“We appreciate the pains Nigerians are going through, but tough times do not last forever; tough people do,” he said.

Mr Shettima disclosed that the Federal Government would soon roll out additional programmes targeted at easing the burden on citizens, including e-logistics services in the North-West and electric transportation projects in the North-East.

He said the government would launch 10,600 electric tricycles in the North-East, alongside 300 buses and e-taxis, as part of efforts to reduce transportation difficulties and ameliorate the effects of economic hardship.

The Vice President also said the initiatives were evidence of President Tinubu’s concern for ordinary Nigerians, insisting that the administration remained committed to improving living conditions.

The meeting between President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima was their first public interaction since the President returned from his European vacation and the Vice President’s return from the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

President Tinubu had, in his Independence Day broadcast, maintained that Nigeria was on the path to prosperity.

However, opposition figures have rejected the administration’s assessment of the economy.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar accused the Tinubu administration of worsening poverty since assuming office, while former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, argued that Nigerians were experiencing increased hunger and insecurity under the present government.

LP Youth Considering Possible Tinubu Re-election Support

Published

on

The youth wing of the Labour Party (LP) has commenced consultations on a proposed political realignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The proposed alignment is expected to involve the Renewed Hope Movement, City Boy Movement and other support groups backing President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The development was disclosed by the Edo State LP Youth Leader, Mr Ken Omusi, in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.

Mr Omusi said the proposal emerged from a virtual meeting held on October 2, attended by the party’s National Youth Leader, Mr Kennedy Ahanotu, members of the national youth leadership, zonal youth leaders and state youth leaders.

According to him, the meeting examined the political direction of the Labour Party amid its prolonged internal crisis, as well as the future of youth participation in governance ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said several youth leaders expressed concerns over what they described as inadequate recognition, engagement and support for the youth constituency during and after the 2023 presidential election.

The statement quoted the participants as saying they wanted a political platform capable of creating greater opportunities for youth participation, leadership development, economic empowerment and inclusion in national decision-making.

The youth leaders also reviewed policies and programmes of the Tinubu administration, particularly in human capital development, youth empowerment, economic reforms, infrastructure, healthcare, education, security, agriculture and workers’ welfare.

Mr Omusi said the participants expressed differing views on the administration’s policies and their implications for Nigeria’s development.

He added that the meeting mandated Mr Ahanotu to commence consultations with stakeholders within the APC and other relevant political groups to explore the prospects of political alignment and possible collaboration ahead of the 2027 elections.

The youth leaders, according to Mr Omusi, expressed confidence in Mr Ahanotu’s leadership and tasked him with facilitating the consultations through dialogue and consensus-building.

He said the meeting also proposed a physical gathering of Labour Party youth leaders in Abuja, where the outcome of the consultations would be reviewed and further steps on the proposed realignment determined.

“The proposed engagement represents an ongoing dialogue within the Labour Party’s youth constituency on political participation, strategic partnerships, and the role of young Nigerians in shaping the country’s political and developmental future,” Mr Omusi said.

NDC Urges Calabar PDP Attack Probe, Condemns APC’s “Hasty” Response

Published

on

The Cross River State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for an immediate and transparent investigation into the reported violence and disruption of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship Campaign activity in Calabar South, last Friday.

The NDC’s demand followed alleged reports that the PDP campaign team was prevented from accessing the African Club venue along Calabar Road on Friday, where it was scheduled to hold a town hall and stakeholder consultation engagement.
The NDC said the disruption was followed by violence, with vehicles reportedly damaged and persons injured.
The party also criticised what it described as the “hasty and petty response” attributed to APC Cross River State Publicity Secretary, Mr Emmanuel Inyang, who reportedly urged the PDP to “look elsewhere” for those responsible.
The NDC said the response was premature because police investigations were still ongoing and responsibility for the reported violence had not been publicly established.
“Rather than engage in premature blame-trading, political leaders should allow the security agencies to investigate and establish the facts,” it stated.
It called for the reported denial of access to the African Club, alleged gunfire, injuries and property damage to be investigated “without fear or favour”.
The party also cited an earlier disturbance at the Palace of the Paramount Ruler of Calabar South, where three persons were reportedly injured. The PDP subsequently alleged that its convoy came under attack, with several vehicles damaged.
The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the incidents and said it was verifying reports of gunfire, injuries and property damage.
The State Publicity Secretary of NDC, Comrade Cletus Amawu, who made this known in a statement on Saturday, said the party also demanded that security agencies to  investigate all aspects of the incidents and remain “strictly neutral, professional and non-partisan” in managing political activities.
“We insist that justice must be based on evidence and that no individual or political organisation should be shielded if found culpable,” the party said.
The party also urged the state governor, Prince Bassey Otu, and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state to demonstrate political tolerance and civility as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
It stressed that Cross River belongs to all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, and said opposition parties must be free to organise, consult, campaign and present alternative programmes to voters.
“Political differences should be settled through dialogue, lawful political engagement and ultimately through the ballot, not intimidation or violence,” the party said.
The NDC warned against conduct capable of overheating the political atmosphere in the state, urging all political actors to protect Cross River’s reputation for peace and dialogue.
The NDC further appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, youth leaders and other stakeholders to speak against political violence.

2027: APC Declares Support For Own Candidates Only, Warns Against Anti-Party Activities

Published

on

The Ebonyi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned party stakeholders against anti-party activities, insisting that all members must unite and support the party’s candidates in the 2027 general elections.

The State Chairman, Chief Stanley Emegha, gave the warning during a meeting between the State Working Committee (SWC) and stakeholders from Afikpo Local Government Area at the party secretariat in Abakaliki.

Chief Emegha stressed that party members must close ranks, set aside personal differences and work collectively to ensure APC’s victory at the polls.

Responding, the Afikpo Local Government Chairman, Hon. Timothy Nwachi, assured the party leadership that stakeholders in the area were committed to the success of all APC candidates, irrespective of their perceived shortcomings.

Hon. Nwachi said several meetings had been held to reconcile aggrieved members, noting that efforts to restore peace and unity were yielding positive results.

The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Skills Development, Prof. Ajuka Obasi; immediate past council chairman, Hon. Uchenna Ibiam; Chief Donatus Aja, and other stakeholders supported the position, pledging their commitment to the party’s candidates.

The APC National Treasurer, Chief Mathew Uguru, who attended the meeting, urged aggrieved members to embrace peace and unity in the interest of the party.

Chief Uguru commended Chief Emegha for his dedication to strengthening the APC in Ebonyi State.

The SWC also held an interface with the 64 Development Centers Coordinators, 13 Local Government Areas APC Chairmen and 171 Ward Chairmen.

These engagements with various stakeholders indicate that the Ebonyi APC is leaving nothing to chance in its quest to secure a landslide victory for all its candidates in the 2027 general elections.

However, observers are keenly watching to see how the strategy will influence the outcome of the polls in the state.
