NMDPRA Seals Two Petrol Stations In Rivers For Under-Dispensing

Published

on

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has sealed two filling stations in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for under-dispensing petroleum products to motorists and other members of the public.

The sealed facilities are MRS Filling Station on Azikiwe Road and Stageoil Filling Station along Aba Road, both in Port Harcourt.

The NMDPRA team also inspected other filling stations during the exercise, including the NNPC Mega Filling Station located at Lagos Bus Stop in the old Port Harcourt Township, Reinoil, TotalEnergies and NNPC Filling Station in Trans Amadi.

The action followed a routine surveillance and enforcement exercise conducted by the NMDPRA in the metropolis yesterday to ascertain the quantity and quality of petroleum products dispensed by retail outlets, as well as compliance with safety standards.

Speaking to newsmen after the exercise, the NMDPRA Executive Director, Health, Safety, Environment and Community, Dr Mustapha Lamorde, said the inspection was aimed at protecting consumers from being short-changed by filling station owners and operators.

Lamorde said the authority conducted checks on the quantity of products dispensed, their quality and the safety of the retail outlets.

“What we did in the field basically is three things: one, to look at the quantity that you’re buying fuel and its relative to what you are selling and the quantity.

“Also the quality of the product you’re buying, whether it is fit for purpose, whether it is on spec and in conformance with our national quality specification. And importantly, the safety of the operation of the retail outlets,” he stated.

Lamorde further said the surveillance covered petroleum products including Premium Motor Spirit, Automotive Gas Oil, also known as diesel, and DPK, otherwise known as kerosene.

He added that samples were randomly taken for on-the-spot screening as part of the authority’s evidence-based regulatory process.

“Some of the retail outlets are actually under-dispensing. And you can see that what we did immediately is to seal off some of these retail outlets, and then the necessary regulatory action will follow, basically sanctions and all that,” he said.

Lamorde, however, revealed that the inspection found that one of the filling stations visited was over-dispensing without knowing it, directing the operator to stop sales and recalibrate its pump before resuming operations to prevent further losses.

He stated that stations found to be compliant were encouraged to maintain the standard, emphasising that the ultimate objective was to ensure that Nigerians got exactly what they paid for.

“The end game for Nigerians, for consumers, is to make sure that they get what they are paying for. If you’re buying fuel, you get the quantity that you’re paying for. Secondly, you get the quality, which is very, very important for your health, for the environment and also for your vehicle,” Lamorde said.

FG Offers 30-Day Petrol Discount Through NNPC …Sets N1,350 Ceiling Per Litre

Published

on

The Federal Government has announced a 30-day discount on petrol sold by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), with public transport operators to receive priority under the arrangement.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed this yesterday during a press briefing on petrol prices and subsidy-related issues in Abuja.

Oyedele said the measure was designed as a margin discount at NNPC stations and was not a return to petrol subsidy.

“We are offering a discount on petrol dispensed by NNPC Limited for the next 30 days in the first instance with priority for public transporters nationwide. So, it’s not a subsidy; the government is just saying we sell to you at cost,” he said.

The minister said the government was also negotiating a ceiling of N1,350 per litre on the ex-gantry or landing cost of petrol in an effort to reduce sharp fluctuations in pump prices.

Under the proposed arrangement, refiners and importers would absorb any shortfall when costs rise above the ceiling and recover it when crude prices or the exchange rate become more favourable.

Oyedele said the ceiling would be reviewed monthly and the figures published for transparency.

The government is also pursuing other measures to ease the impact of higher fuel prices, including increased cash transfers to vulnerable households, subsidised credit for small businesses and consumers, and a faster rollout of compressed natural gas vehicles.

The minister said the Federal Government had already granted a full waiver of taxes and duties on petrol, which he said was worth more than N3.3tn for the year up to September 30, 2026.

Oyedele stressed that the measures being introduced were not intended to restore a blanket fuel subsidy.

“To be perfectly clear, none of these measures restores a blanket subsidy. To do so would amount to creating longer term harm for a short-term cure. Each measure is designed to reach the people who need help, without putting the wider economy at risk,” he said

The announcement comes as petrol prices at NNPC stations vary across the country.

NNPC’s latest reported price list puts the pump price at N1,355 per litre in Lagos and Rivers, while Abuja is listed at N1,370 per litre.

The Rivers State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Corps Commander Francis Ajatta, has called on the personnel of the Corps to go beyond their routine duties in serving members of the public.
Ajatta made the call as Rivers State Command commenced activities to mark the 2026 Customer Service Week, with the theme, “The Extra Mile”, in Port Harcourt, recently.
The week-long programme, according to him, is aimed at improving service delivery, strengthening engagement with road users and promoting safer roads across Rivers State.
Speaking on the significance of the theme, Ajatta said customer service in the FRSC should go beyond road enforcement, stressing the need for effective communication, prompt response, public education, courtesy and constructive engagement with road users.
He said personnel must cultivate a service-oriented approach in their dealings with motorists, transport operators and other members of the public, noting that professionalism and responsiveness were essential to building public confidence in the Corps.
According to him, the responsibilities of FRSC extend beyond enforcement, as the Corps also has a duty to educate road users, respond promptly to their concerns and work collaboratively with stakeholders to improve road safety.
The Sector Commander urged motorists, transport operators and other stakeholders in the state to participate actively in the activities lined up for the Customer Service Week.
He said stronger partnership between the FRSC and road users remained critical to addressing challenges associated with road safety and reducing crashes and fatalities on the state’s roads.
Activities lined up for the celebration include, a road show, stakeholders’ forum and lecture, free medical outreach, as well as recognition of outstanding stakeholders and staff.
Ajatta said the recognition component of the programme was intended to appreciate individuals and stakeholders who had contributed positively to the road safety mandate of the Corps.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Rivers State Command to improving its service delivery and sustaining collaboration with relevant stakeholders towards safer roads.
The Sector Commander also urged personnel to see every interaction with the public as an opportunity to demonstrate professionalism, courtesy and the commitment of the FRSC to protecting lives on the highways.
