NYG 2025: NSC Give Asaba Facilities Pass Mark, Confirms Date
With just weeks to go before the 9th National Youth Games kick off in Asaba, Delta State, technical experts from the National Sports Commission, state sports commissions, and sports federations have carried out a comprehensive inspection of competition venues and athletes’ accommodations across the capital.
The inspection, conducted in three groups, covered the Stephen Keshi Stadium’s main bowl track, the multipurpose indoor sports halls, and the Olympic-size swimming pool. The tour also extended to the Hockey Complex in Okpanam, the Cenotaph (for volleyball and handball), the Government House Squash Court, and courts for basketball, tennis, and fives.
At the hockey venue, General Manager of Ekiti State Sports Commission, Lawrence Mayowa Ogundele, praised the quality of the pitch, calling it “standard and well-prepared,” but noted minor adjustments that would ensure “a smooth and competitive tournament.” South-South Hockey representative, Felix Gheghor, added that the goalposts would be modified to suit the junior-level competition.
Other venues visited included the Ibori Golf Course, Dennis Osadebe University hostels, Technical College Asaba (for rugby and accommodation), the Ibusa-Asaba Expressway for cycling, Saint Patrick College Hall for boxing, its field for cricket and football, and the AGGS grounds for Abula.
Following the tour, the technical committee held a strategic session in Asaba, with the Director for Grassroots Sports Development, Amaka Asheofu, representing the Commission’s DG promising a more successful Games than previous editions. She acknowledged the host state’s decision to drop certain sports such as baseball, softball, deaf table tennis, and beach volleyball due to accommodation constraints but assured that all remaining events would run seamlessly.
The 9th National Youth Games will run from August 26 to September 6, drawing the nation’s best young talents to Delta State for nearly two weeks of intense sporting action.

PH To Host 2026 NWFL Super Six
In a statement released by the league, the competition is scheduled to take place from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, June 14, 2026, with six clubs set to battle for the league title at the end of the 2025/26 season.
NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, said the choice of Port Harcourt reflects the Rivers State Government’s continued support for women’s football and its successful hosting of the league’s Annual General Assembly last year.
The Super Six tournament will feature the top three teams from Group A and Group B of the regular season competing in a round-robin format, with each club playing five matches over nine days.
Qualified teams for the competition include defending champions Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and debutants Abia Angels.
The NWFL Premiership has produced four different winners in the last five editions, with Rivers Angels winning in 2021, Bayelsa Queens claiming the title in 2022 and 2025, Delta Queens triumphing in 2023, and Edo Queens emerging champions in 2024.
The league also urged participating clubs to comply with all competition regulations and directives ahead of the championship. The Super Six will determine Nigeria’s representative for the WAFU-B qualifiers for a place at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League and ultimately the 2027 FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.
Teams are expected to arrive on Friday, June 5, when the draw ceremony and pre-match meeting will also take place. Matchdays are scheduled for June 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14, with rest days in between before the tournament concludes with the trophy presentation ceremony.
