LG Polls: Don Urges Peace, Transparency
Ahead of the October 5, 2024 Local Government elections in Rivers State, a university teacher in South Africa, Dr. Emmanuel Ngeri Rowlands, has appealed to politicians and the electorate to embrace peace and fair play during the poll.
He also urged the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to resist any indue influence and carry out its mandates with the highest level of integrity.
Rowlands, who is a senior researcher with the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, made the call in a statement made available to The Tide.
The Okrika born university don said it is crucial for all political actors, citizens and stakeholders to embrace peace and shun violence during the election.
According to him, democracy thrives on free, fair and peaceful participation devoid of violence.
Rowlands called on the electorate to vote wisely, saying their vote is their voice, warning that violence and manipulation undermine democracy.
He also urged the political actors to accept whatever would be the outcome of the election in good faith.
He said, “Resorting to violence only destroys the fabrics of our society, let your campaigns focus on real issues that impact in the people.
“When the results are announced, let it be accepted in good faith.
“Every citizen has a role to play in ensuring that the election process is peaceful and our democratic rights are protected.
“RSIEC has a duty to ensure that the election are transparent, free from bias and conducted without manipulations”.
Rowlands appealed to the youths in the State to channel their energies towards positive engagements, and avoid indulging in violence and illegal activities during the poll.
“This is a crucial moment for Rivers State, a peaceful election will serve as a testament to our collective commitment to democracy and unity.
“Let us all play our parts to ensure that the upcoming election marks a step forward in our state development as peace is the only way forward”, he said.
