Nigerian Sprinter Rues Olympics No-Show
Nigerian sprinter Omolara Ogunmakinju, who was part of Nigeria’s contingent to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, has said her second appearance at the Games did not fulfill her dreams after she was left out of the mixed 4x400m relay.
Ogunmakinju, who returned to the tracks in 2021 after a five-year motherhood break, was listed among the six athletes for the mixed 4x400m relay, but she didn’t get to feature as Nigeria failed to reach the final.
The 31-year-old’s exclusion in the heats was a surprise after she ran an inspiring anchor leg to win Nigeria a gold medal at the African Games in Ghana earlier this year.
The mixed relay quartet of Samuel Ogazi, Ella Onojuvwevwo, Emmanuel Ojeli, and Patience Okon George failed to reach the final after finishing fourth in the heat and ninth overall despite clocking a new national record of 3:11.99.
“My Olympic journey didn’t unfold as I had hoped, but I’m thankful for God’s faithfulness and guidance throughout. Though my dreams weren’t fulfilled, I’m content and trusting in His plan,” Ogunmakinju said in a Facebook post on Monday.
Ogunmakinju could have gotten another opportunity to compete in the women’s 4x400m, but Nigeria failed to qualify for the event.
Since she started representing the country in 2011, Ogunmakinju has won three African Games gold, two African Championships gold, as well as a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games.
