Port Harcourt To Host Nigeria Premier Basketball League Final Four
Port Harcourt has been chosen to host the Nigeria Premier Basketball League Final Four.
Rivers Hoopers, Nigeria Customs, Gboko City Chiefs and Hoops & Read are the four teams that have qualified to play in the Finals of the 2023 Premier Basketball League scheduled from 22-26 November.
The quartet will battle for the league title and the automatic spot to the 2024 Basketball Africa League.
It is the first time in history the league champion is being decided by a Final Four format.
Games will be played in a round robin format and the best two teams will advance to play the final.
General Manager of Rivers Hoopers Basketball Club, Ifie Ozaka said, ‘’The format that is being used this year is an interesting format and hasn’t been done before since we got into the league.
“It is going to be interesting this year. We are going to put up a good show as host and we are going to make sure that fans of basketball in Nigeria and around the world watching are not going to be disappointed.”
Port Harcourt hosted the Final 8 of the DSTV Premier Basketball League in 2010, which was considered one of the best basketball finals held in Nigeria till date.
The long-serving General Manager said fans would have the opportunity to watch Rivers Hoopers who last played competitive basketball on their home court in 2017.
‘’It would mean a lot for Rivers Hoopers especially for the players. The last time we played in front of our home fans was way back in 2017, that’s a long time so the fans will have the opportunity to watch their darling team at home and the players have the opportunity to showcase their talent in front of their darling fans. Their fans only get to see them train once in a while’’.
Ozaka concluded,”We thank the NBBF, League Management Committee for choosing Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Governor and the Honourable Commissioner for Sports for their love and support for basketball, and their support in getting this down to Port Harcourt.’’

Iwobi Optimistic On S’Eagles Qualification
Iwobi spoke to Tidesports source ahead of Nigeria’s crunch playoff semi-final against Gabon on Thursday, November 13, in Rabat, Morocco.
The 28-year-old was reacting to Nigeria’s shaky World Cup qualifying campaign that saw the Eagles finish second in Group C behind South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.
“We’ve managed to rescue ourselves from the dead,” Iwobi told Tidesports source.
We know we have the players and the abilities to compete against any other country in the world.”
The Fulham star pointed to Nigeria’s star power, highlighting African Footballer of the Year winners Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen as proof of the squad’s quality.
“We have last year’s African best player (Ademola Lookman), the year before that (Victor Osimhen),” he said.
“It’ll be a shame if we don’t make it, but we have a lot of confidence. We just have to prove it to ourselves.”
Nigeria’s path to the United States, Canada and Mexico has been turbulent, with two coaches departing during the early stages of qualifying before Éric Chelle steadied the ship to steer the Super Eagles into November’s CAF playoffs.
Four nations from the continent – Nigeria, Cameroon, DR Congo and Gabon – will vie for a solitary spot to compete in next March’s inter-confederation playoffs, with a view to joining the already nine qualified African nations at the Finals.
It would mark Iwobi’s second appearance at the World Cup Finals and the Super Eagles’ first since the 2018 edition of the competition.
Back then, Iwobi featured in all three games as Nigeria was knocked out in the group stage.
